Why play futsal instead of traditional arena style indoor soccer?
Futsal is the official indoor soccer game of FIFA and United States Soccer.
Futsal is a small sided game (5v5) played on a basketball court with a smaller (size 3-4) low bounce ball. The special low bounce ball encourages players to develop and use their ball striking and ball control skills resulting in better technical refinement. With four field players each of the 3 basic elements of the game – penetration, depth and width – are presented to the ball carrier without duplication. This allows players to gain maximum experience in basic decision-making sequences they encounter in playing soccer.
Futsal utilizes touchlines as boundaries. There are no walls in play. In arena style walled the ball is regularly played against or off the boards, which all too often rewards errant play.
Futsal is an unforgiving game that forces player to develop quality touches in a fast paced, action packed environment without the safety net of dasher boards.
Futsal is the game that many of world’s top soccer players played as youth. It is considered superior to walled soccer for better developing skills and technique because players are constantly reminded to play with the same skill set to control the game that is required for success in the outdoor game.
Futsal is an exciting and action packed game. In a statistical study comparing Futsal to indoor arena soccer with walls, it was found that Futsal players touch the ball 210% more often. More touches on the ball translate to more FUN for those playing futsal. More touches also translate to quicker development and faster refinement of the skills necessary to play soccer.
